How to Play California Lottery Daily 4

First off, walk into any retailer (a gas station, a convenience store, a food store, etc. which plays California Lottery) and grab a Daily 4 playslip. A playslip contains five different play areas, marked Play A through Play E. Each play area represents a different Daily 4 play. If you want to play only one number, fill out only the Play A panel; if you want to play 15 numbers, then get three playslips and fill all the panels, A to E, of all of them.

Each play panel contains four rows of the digits 0 to 9. Mark the first digit of your number on the first row, the second digit of your number on the second row, the third digit the third row, and the fourth digit on the fourth row. So, if you want to play the number 7631, then 7 will be marked in the first row, 6 in the second row, 3 in the third row, and 1 in the fourth row. Next select and mark the the type of play (Playetyle) - Straight, Box, or Straight/Box. Each Daily 4 game costs $1.

Next, present the completed playslip to the lottery retailer to receive your printed ticket. Check your ticket immediately to ensure that the numbers, dates, and play type match your request.

Play Types and How You Win the California Daily 4 Lottery

There are three ways you can play the California Daily 4 game - two basic types and one shortcut of the basic two. These types are listed below.

The basic Daily 4 play types are:

1. Straight: You win by matching numbers in the exact order drawn. For example, if you play the Daily 4 number 7631 as straight, you'll win only if the winning number is 7631; you don't win anything if the winning number is 7613 or 7632.

   The prize of California Daily 4 Straight game is paid on pari-mutuel basis.

2. Box: You win by matching numbers in any order. For example, if you play 7631 as Box, you'll win if the Daily 4 winning number contains the four digits 1, 3, 6, and 7 in any order, such as 6713 or 1367; but not if any one is missing like 7632.

   The prize of California Daily 4 Box play depends on whether any of the digits are repeated or not. A number such as 7631, where none of the digits repeats (usally called 24-way Box) pays the least amount among all Box types. If one of the digits is double, like 7633 (usally called 12-way Box) it pays about twice the non-repeating-digits. If two digits are doubled, like 7667 (usally called 6-way Box) it pays about 4 times the non-repeating-digits. If one of the digits is tripled, like 7666 (usally called 4-way Box) it pays about 6 times the non-repeating-digits. There is no Box play for numbers with all four identical digits such as 7777. These Daily 4 numbers can only be played Straight.

And the shortcut play types are:

3. Straight/Box: is simply a combination of a 50-cent Straight play and a 50-cent Box play.

   The prize of a Straight/Box play is the sum of half of Straight game payment and half of Box payment. For example, if you play 7631 as Straight/Box, and if the winning number is 7631, then you'll win half the prize of the Straight game plus half the prize of a Box game. If the winning number is 7613, you'll win only the box part since you did not match it Straight.

How much does California Daily 4 pay for Straight or Box? The following is a summary winner prize payouts and the odds of winning.

Note that a 24-way Box is a number with four non-identical digits; a 12-way Box has one of the digits repeated; a 6-way Box has two of the digits doubled; a 4-way Box has one digits and three identical digits.
