Massachusetts Lottery General Information

The Massachusetts Lottery plays three state drawn game - The Numbers Game (with midday and evening draws), Mass Cash, and Megabucks Doubler. Plus, three multiple-state games - Powerball, Mega Millions, and the recently launched New England States' game, Lucky for Life. Compared to other states, the Massachusetts Lottery offers fairlly high variety of lottery games.

Top prizes listed with "rollover" are the starting amount. The Jackpot prizes will grow after every draw until someone wins. Pari-mutuel prize structure means players' winnings are determined by dividing the prize pool allocated for that winning category by the number of winners.

Massachusetts Lottery General Rules and Regulations

The following are the most prominent rules and regulations that the player should be aware of before playing the Massachusetts lottery games.

  • You must be 18 or older to buy Massachusetts Lottery tickets.
  • It is unlawful for the Massachusetts Lottery to offer its games for sale online.
  • Players can purchase Season Tickets for 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months. When you win, a check comes directly in the mail to your house, with the exception of jackpot prizes. See How to Purchase Massachusetts Lottery Season Tickets.
  • You must notify the Lottery claims department in writing about a lost ticket. You must provide all the details, such as date played, time played, where played, number played, etc. The claims department will research the claim and notify you of the result. If you lose a season ticket that has been registered you can call the Season Ticket department to request a duplicate.

Claiming Prizes of the Massachusetts Lottery

Here are the steps you have to follow if you are a lucky winner of any Massachusetts lottery,

  • All Massachusetts Lottery cash prizes must be claimed within one (1) year following the draw date.
  • Prizes of $600 or less may be redeemed at any Massachusetts Lottery retailer.
  • To claim a prize from $601 to $49,999, you must visit a Lottery regional office (Boston, Braintree, New Bedford, Woburn, Worcester or West Springfield).
  • You must claim any prize over $50,000 at the Massachusetts Lottery Headquarters in Braintree, MA.
  • The Lottery requires proof of positive identification for all prizes over $600. You must have a photo ID that contains your signature, proof of your social security number and proof of current address when claiming a prize over $600.
  • It is important to sign the back of your ticket to establish your ownership of the ticket. Without a signature on the back, a lottery ticket is considered a “bearer instrument” and can be claimed by anyone presenting the ticket.
  • If your Lottery prize is greater than $5,000, 25% of your prize will be automatically withheld and sent directly to the Internal Revenue Service. In addition, 5% is required to be withheld and sent to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

Where do the Massachusetts Lottery profits go?

Lottery revenues (approximately 23%) are transferred to the Local Aid Fund and returned to the cities and towns of the Commonwealth in the form of local aid.
