How to Play New Jersey Pick 4 Lottery

From a New Jersey Lottery retailer (a gas station, a convenience store, a food store, etc. which plays NJ Lottery) get a Pick 4 playslip. A playslip contains five different play areas. Each play area represents a different Pick 4 play. If you want to play only one number, fill out only the first panel; if you want to play 10 numbers, then get two playslips and fill all the panels of both of them.

Each play panel contains four columns of the digits 0 to 9. Mark the first digit of your number on the first column, the second digit on the second column, the third digit on the third column, and the fourth digit on the fourth column. So, if you want to play 8142, then 8 will be marked in the first column, 1 in the second column, 4 in the third column, and 2 in the fourth column. Next select and mark the amount (50 cents or $1), then select the type of play - Straight or Box.

The numbers you are playing are valid only for the next draw. If you want to specify either the day or evining draw, or both, you can do so by marking the 'DAY', 'EVE' or 'BOTH' boxes. In fact, playing for both draws doubles the price.

Next, present the completed playslip to the lottery retailer to receive your printed ticket. Check your ticket immediately to ensure that the numbers, dates, and play type match your request.

Play Types and How You Win the New Jersey Pick 4 Lottery

There are only two ways you can play and win the New Jersey Pick 4 game. These types together with how much is paid for a winning New Jersey Pick 4 game type are listed below.

1. Straight: You win by matching the winning Pick 4 number in the exact order drawn. For example, if you play the 8142 as Straight, you'll win only if the winning number is exactly 8142; you don't win anything if the winning number is 8412 or 8144.

   The average prize of New Jersey Pick 3 Straight game is $5,576 for a $1 game and $2,788 for a 50¢ game.

2. Box (Combination): You win by matching the numbers in any order. For example, if you play 8142 as Box, you'll win if the Pick 4 winning number contains the four digits 1, 2, 4, and 8 in any order, such as 2148 or 4218; but not if any one is missing like 8144.

   The prize of New Jersey Pick 4 box play depends on whether the digits are repeated or not. A number such as 8142, where none of the digits repeats is called a 24-way box and pays 1/24 of straight prize bet (about $232 for a $1 game and $116 for a 50¢ game). If one of the digits is double, like 8182, then it is called a 12-way box and pays 1/12 of Straight prize bet (about $464 for a $1 game and $232 for a 50¢ game). If two digits are doubled, like 8118, then it is called a 6-way box and pays 1/6 of Straight prize bet (about $929 for a $1 game and $464.50 for a 50¢ game). If one of the digits is tripled, like 8188, then it is called a 4-way box and pays 1/4 of Straight prize bet (about $1394 for a $1 game and $697 for a 50¢ game). There is no Box play for numbers with all four identical digits such as 8888. These Pick 4 numbers can only be played Straight.

How much does New Jersey Pick 4 pay for Straight or Box? The following is a summary of winner prize payouts and the odds of winning.

Note that a 24-way Box is a number with four non-identical digits; a 12-way Box has one of the digits repeated; a 6-way Box has two of the digits doubled; a 4-way Box has one digits and three identical digits.
