Tennessee Lottery General Information

The Tennessee Lottery plays three state drawn games - Cash 3 (with midday and evening draws), Cash 4 (with midday and evening draws), and Tennessee Cash. Plus, two multiple-state games - Powerball and Mega Millions. Compared to other states, the Tennessee Lottery offers a medium variety of lottery games.

Tennessee Lottery drawings are conducted at the Tennessee Lottery’s headquarters in Nashville using one of two automated drawing machines. These are stand-alone computers that operate as random number generators. The results can be viewed on TV stations listed here.

Top prizes listed with "rollover" are the starting amount. The Jackpot prizes will grow after every draw until someone wins. Pari-mutuel prize structure means players' winnings are determined by dividing the prize pool allocated for that winning category by the number of winners.

Tennessee Lottery General Rules and Regulations

The following are the most prominent rules and regulations that the player should be aware of before playing the Tennessee lottery games.

  • Tennessee Lottery players must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Tennessee Lottery tickets cannot be bought on the internet or through a subscription. You cannot use debit or credit card to purchase tickets. Tennessee law requires that all Lottery tickets must be purchased in-person at a participating retailer, and tickets can only be purchased with cash.
  • Lottery tickets are bearer instruments, just like cash. If you lose your ticket, anyone can claim it. It is always wise to sign your ticket immediately after purchase to identify it as yours and to help prevent someone else from cashing it, in the event that it is lost or stolen. The Tennessee Lottery is not liable for lost, stolen or damaged tickets.

Claiming Prizes of the Tennessee Lottery

Here are the steps you have to follow if you are a lucky winner of any Tennessee lottery,

  • Winning tickets must be claimed within 180 days of the draw date on the ticket.
  • Sign the back of your winning ticket.
  • Any prize with a value of less than $600, including free tickets, can be claimed at any participating retailer or Lottery district office or by mail. To verify prize amount, ask your retailer for a copy of the validation receipt after cashing your ticket.
  • Any prize ranging from $600 to $199,999 must be claimed at any of the Tennessee Lottery's district offices including the Lottery's headquarters or by mail.
  • Any prize with a value of $200,000 or above must be claimed at the Lottery’s headquarters in Nashville.
  • For claims over $599, you will be required to produce a valid ID to verify your name, current address, and Social Security number
  • Any Tennessee Lottery prize can be claimed by mail at the following address:

  • The State of Tennessee does not tax lottery winnings, but prizes are subject to Federal income taxes.

Where do the Tennessee Lottery profits go?

Out of every dollar spent on tickets, the largest portion is used to pay prizes. Other portions are used to pay retailers, fund education programs and for Lottery operations

Lottery-funded scholarships and grants are available to Tennessee students attending public or private colleges or universities across the state. Lottery revenues may also be used for pre-kindergarten and after-school programs.

All scholarships and grants are administered by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, using funds deposited into an education account by the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation.
