Washington Lottery General Information

The Washington Lottery plays five state drawn games - The Daily Game, Match 4, Daily Keno, Hit 5, and Lotto. Plus, two multiple-state games - Powerball and Mega Millions. Compared to other states, the Washington Lottery offers a medium variety of lottery games.

Top prizes listed with "rollover" are the starting amount. The Jackpot prizes will grow after every draw until someone wins. Pari-mutuel prize structure means players' winnings are determined by dividing the prize pool allocated for that winning category by the number of winners.

Washington Lottery General Rules and Regulations

The following are the most prominent rules and regulations that the player should be aware of before playing the Washington lottery games.

  • Washington Lottery players must be 18 years of age or older. Minors may receive tickets as gifts.
  • Washington Lottery employees and family members with whom they reside are restricted from purchasing Lottery tickets and claiming a share of a winning Lottery ticket.
  • You cannot buy Washington Lottery tickets over the internet. The only legal Washington's Lottery ticket is one purchased at a licensed Lottery retail store location in Washington State.
  • Losing a lottery ticket is almost like losing cash. Protect yourself by signing the back of your tickets when you buy them. At the very least, sign any winning tickets, even before claiming your prize. Lottery tickets are bearer instruments. Unless you sign a ticket, anyone else who has the ticket can claim the prize.

Claiming Prizes of the Washington Lottery

Here are the steps you have to follow if you are a lucky winner of any Washington lottery,

  • Winning tickets must be claimed within 180 days of the winning draw date on the ticket.
  • Prizes may be claimed in person or by mail.
  • Sign the back of your winning ticket and keep it in a cool, secure, dry place.
  • If your prize is $600 or under, you may claim your winnings at any Washington's Lottery retailer subject to validation.
  • If your prize is $601 or more, you can claim at any Lottery regional office. When claiming prizes of $1,000,000 or more, please call a Lottery office to receive more information and make an appointment to claim.
  • All Lottery jackpot, cashpot and Mega Millions second tier prizes of $250,000 must be claimed in person at a Lottery office.
  • To claim prizes by mail:
    For prizes of $600 or less, complete the information on the back of a winning ticket, make sure you have signed the ticket, and mail it to:

    For prizes of $601 and more, download a Lottery prize claim form. Complete the form and send it to the address listed on the form. This form is required for tax purposes, along with the winner's social security number. Lottery prize claim forms may also be picked up at any Lottery retailer or office statewide.
  • The Lottery is required to report any single prize of over $600 to the IRS. The current tax rate is 25 percent. If the prize is over $5,000 the Lottery is required to withhold and forward taxes at the time the prize is paid. Winners will be sent a W-2G form at year's end to use in filing their tax returns.

Where do the Washington Lottery profits go?

Lottery proceeds benefit education construction, stadium debt reduction, and the General Fund.

Lottery dollars for education now help fund college scholarships and state financial aid programs. From July 2010, more than $100 million annually in Lottery proceeds will be dedicated to the Washington Opportunity Pathways Account to support programs such as the State Need Grant, the State Work Study, the Washington Scholars, and the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE). Funds from the account may also be used for early learning programs.

Funds from the account will also help support early childhood education programs through the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP).
