How to Play Tri-State Pick 4 Lottery

From a Tri-State Lottery retailer (a gas station, a convenience store, a food store, etc. which plays DC Lottery) get a Pick 4 playslip. A playslip contains four different play areas, marked Play 1 through Play 4. Each play area represents a different Pick 4 game. If you want to play only one number, fill out only the first panel; if you want to play 20 numbers, then get five playslips and fill all the panels, 1 to 4, of all of them.

Each play panel contains four colums of the digits 0 to 9. Mark the first digit of your number on the first column, the second digit on the second column, the third digit on the third column, and the fourth digit on the fourth column. So, if you want to play 8142, then 8 will be marked in the first column, 1 in the second column, 4 in the third column, and 2 in the fourth column. Next select and mark the amount (50 cents or $1), then select the type of play - Straight or Box.

The other 4 play types need only partial selection of numbers. For "Front Pair", you need to mark only the first two columns; for "Mid Pair", mark the middle two; for "Back Pair", mark the last two digits.

Next, present the completed playslip to the lottery retailer to receive your printed ticket. Check your ticket immediately to ensure that the numbers, dates, and play type match your request.

Play Types and How You Win the Tri-State Pick 4 Lottery

There are six ways you can play the Tri-State Pick 4 game. These types together with how much is paid for a winning Tri-State Pick 4 number are listed below.

  1. Straight: You win by matching the winning Pick 4 number in the exact order drawn. For example, if you play the Pick 4 number 8142 as straight, you'll win only if the winning number is exactly 8142; you don't win anything if the winning number is 8412 or 8144.

The prize of Tri-State Pick 4 Straight game is $5,000 for a $1 game and $2,500 for a 50 cents game.

  2. Box: You win by matching the numbers in any order. For example, if you play 8142 as box, you'll win if the Pick 4 winning number contains the four digits 1, 2, 4, and 8 in any order, such as 2148 or 4218; but not if any one is missing like 8144.

The prize of Tri-State Pick 4 box play depends on whether the digits are repeated or not. A number such as 8142, where none of the digits repeats is called a 24-way box and pays $208 for a $1 game and $104 for a 50 cents game. If one of the digits is double, like 8182, then it is called a 12-way box and pays $416 for a $1 game and $208 for a 50-cents game. If two digits are doubled, like 8118, then it is called a 6-way box and pays $834 for a $1 game and $417 for a 50-cents game. If one of the digits is tripled, like 8188, then it is called a 4-way box and pays $1250 for a $1 game and $625 for a 50-cents game. There is no box play for numbers with all four identical digits such as 8888. These Pick 4 numbers can only be played straight.

  3. Front Pair: Just select the first two digits to win $50 for a $1 game and $25 for a 50-cents game. For example, if you play the front pair 81 (i.e., 81XX), you'll win as long as the first two digits of the winning number are 81 in exact order. So, you'll win with 8102, 8113, etc., but not with 1802 or 1381.

  4. Back Pair: Just select the last two digits to win $50 for a $1 game and $25 for a 50-cents game. For example, if you play the back pair 42 (i.e., XX42), you'll win as long as the last two digits of the winning number are 42 in exact order. So, you'll win with 0142, 3242, etc., but not with 0124 or 4201.

  5. Middle Pair: Just select the middle two digits to win $50 for a $1 game and $25 for a 50-cents game. For example, if you play the middle pair 14 (i.e., X14X), you'll win as long as the middle two digits of the winning number are 14 in exact order. So, you'll win with 0142, 3143, etc., but not with 0412 or 1414.

  6. Single Digit: Here, you select the position of a single digit to wi $2.50 per 50-cents bet. For instance, you may just play 8XXX by marking only 8 in the first column; X1XX by marking only 1 in the second column; XX4X by marking only 4 in the third column; or, XXX2 by marking only 2 in the fourth column.
